BABS SMITH

As a multidisciplinary artist, Smith's choice of medium is part of her process in the context of each metaphor. Smith's practice considers the significance of scientific imagery as metaphors for human existence. Utilising a micro to macro process the artist investigates tears, and how the human visceral response of crying manifests into something physical. Smith's intention is to take these transient experiences and transform them into tactile objects that can be handled and physically experienced, bringing a subconscious connection through which the artist explores the fragility of life. Process is everything and with the interruption of Covid19 this work took on a new meaning resulting in the exhibition proposal becoming the work. Many of us found ourselves 'on the verge of tears', particularly at the start of lockdown.
